"Pradnya, wake up you're getting late!" Mom woke her up as usual in her style, snatching her teddy vigorously and Pradnya too woke up as usual, in slow motion, rubbing her eyes and yawning long just to have more scoldings. Pradnya then made her bed like a good girl, got ready, had her breakfast and went on to the bus stop. She used to go 10 mins earlier before the arrival of the bus as she couldn't afford missing both the bus and the lectures due to her short attendance. Everything was pretty usual; the same everyday routine.
But one day a mid-aged person (around his fourties) passed by her and she felt extremely awkward.
That was obvious too as his lungi was not in his place, his things could be seen.
Indeed that was creepy and horrible.
She ignored that day but it started happening on a daily basis. She didn't tell anybody, she thought the man is a grown up, he must know how to behave in public, but then would forget as she had better and much important things to do.
Days passed and weekend came. Pradnya was completing her assignments and mom was enjoying holiday binge. Obviously she was watching that typical "Saas-bahu" drama. One scene came where a girl was going to marry a widower. She had a grey shade in her character (maybe villain or maybe not) . She had done no other mistake than marrying a skeptical person whom she had given divorce. And it was totally fine to marry a widower if he is better than her ex husband.
"Does she have left any shame? See she's marrying again with another guy within six months of her first marriage!" Pradnya's mom grumbled."But mom that widower is also marrying twice!" Pradnya tampered in between.
"Girls these days! Pradnya women should marry only once."
"So should guys!!" Again Pradnya intervened.
"How dare you reply me! It's mentioned in the holy books and is followed since ages. Men can marry as much women they want. They're allowed to do whatever they want. But women can't. Go marry ten guys! This mobile and internet has ruined teenagers!"
Pradnya didn't talk anything. Her mind became numb, her thoughts were empty. Her 'Mom' whom she thought to be a forward, cool, modern and broad minded person was actually an orthodox person.
'Thank God I didn't tell her anything about that man on bus stop! Otherwise she would have blamed me only.....tears rolled down her cheeks but she decided to be strong now onwards. She would burst into emotions but gradually the frequency decreased and finally she became an emotionless person. This ain't just about Pradnya, there must be thousands of girls who suffer like or maybe even worse than her. Pradnya became emotionless, but that's not a solution; we must build a society, an environment healthy and positive enough to let everyone live and breathe freely. Where we won't blame our girls but support them, make them feel safe, secure and liberal.
Can we?

Definitely, we can! And we will. There's a limit and when it's crossed, universe has it's own way of restoring things back.
